The popular twentieth-century writer Fumiko Hayashi (1903-1951) was best known for her autobiographical novel "Vagabond's Song" and "Floating Clouds." Her tastefully appointed home, where she lived with her husband (the painter Rokubin Tezuka) and their son, has been preserved here along with extensive gardens.
The house was built in 1941 and is made up of two physically separate wings which were later joined. It was constructed this way due to wartime restrictions on the size of residential buildings, and one of the wings was officially registered in her husband's name.
Visitors here can peer into nearly all the rooms of the house, wander around the quiet garden areas, and explore the "atelier" where they can watch a documentary about Hayashi and browse through books. There's also a tiny shop area selling books and postcards. An English-language pamphlet available at the entrance describes the house, and Hayashi's life, in great detail.
